5 Questions with Brett

This article comes from an interview conducted with Brett Spangler, friend of The Guru and host of Quick News Daily Podcast, available on Podcast Guru or wherever you enjoy podcasts.

Can you share what your podcast is about and who would enjoy it?

I based the show loosely on “The Daily” from the New York Times. However, I wanted to cover all top stories of the day instead of a deep dive on one topic, and I only wanted it to be news that matters to everyday people instead of pure clickbait stories. Lastly, I wanted it to be informal, explained in simple terms, delivered by someone outside the media, and slightly geared toward college-age listeners like myself.

It’s real news for real people who might not have time to listen to regular news but still want to be informed.

What is the most fascinating thing you have learned in the course of producing your show?

I’ve gained a lot more respect for the entire production process for regular news shows. Not only is editing A LOT more time consuming than I thought (god bless audio editors; microphones pick up so much!), but just getting the words out is hard as well, script or no script. quick news daily interview

Can you share something about yourself that you think listeners would find surprising?

Well if you’ve met me in person, you’d notice really quickly that I’m a massive introvert and soft-spoken. I get pretty opinionated on the Quick News Daily show, but it would take a lot to get that out of me in person. I always guessed that podcasting would be the thing for me because it’s just me, a microphone, and whatever I decide to keep in the show.

What podcasts or other media have influenced or inspired you?

Watching political shows and election coverage has been my hobby since middle school, and I recently got into movie reviews from YouTubers like Jeremy Jahns and Chris Stuckmann. Even more recently than that, I got into podcasts like Pod Save America, Hacks on Tap, the Last Podcast on the Left, and the Unbelievable Podcast, so that got me thinking about combining these couple of ideas.

Do you have any advice you can share with anyone considering getting into podcasting?

Make sure you know why you’re starting, and keep that in mind throughout. This advice is for both the content you produce and the amount of time you devote. If you have a vision (I knew I didn’t like traditional news and wanted to change it), stick to that vision. Then, decide if you want it to either be a hobby, or something more since trying to produce and grow a podcast is a ton of work.
